Coach G’s Nutrition Corner: Vitamin D, the important fat-soluble vitamin…
By Garrett Rolsma
This week I wanted to expand on last week’s topic of the importance of Calcium in your nutrition. One of the most important things to think about with calcium is your consumption of Vitamin D. To keep it simple, Vitamin D and Calcium work together to achieve optimal benefits. Without adequate Vitamin D you are potentially unable to utilize calcium for bone remodeling and health. When looking for Vitamin D, just look up. In healthy bodies, we synthesize Vitamin D from direct sun exposure. Depending on your location on the planet, you could receive all the rays you need for ample Vitamin D production, but for a lot of us, it is not enough. Look for fatty fish like herring, sardines, salmon, tuna, mackerel, fortified beverages like milk or orange juices, egg yolks, beef liver, and even mushrooms.
In closing, to ensure adequate amounts of Vitamin D, practice safe sun. The benefits of sun exposure are a very fine line, too much without protection and you could increase your chances of skin issues in the future. Try to enjoy time in the sun while eating those vitamin D containing foods. To be sure, I recommend talking to your doctor to potentially have your Vitamin D tested. Knowing where you stand today will help you plan your nutrition accordingly.
