Coach G’s Nutrition Corner: Timing

TIME, not the magazine, but time to eat:

 

Proper nutrition is only partly about the selection of highly nutritious foods and beverages. A huge part to seeing the benefits of a healthier diet is the timing of your nutrition. When you consume specific nutrients, when you avoid ones, the timing is more important than you think. We all know that proteins, fats, carbohydrates and the huge list of vitamins and minerals all have their place in a healthy body, when you decide to eat them is entirely up to you. Nutrient timing is a huge topic in the nutrition and performance world, and what works for someone will most likely not work for you. What I recommend is do some research and find what works best for you. For the general population, the rule of thumb that I recommend to everyone is approximately 3 hours. Whether it is a balanced meal, healthy snack, or quick shake, strive to eat every 3 hours to ensure that you are adequately fueled through your entire day. Breaking up an entire days’ worth of food into 3 hour chunks will allow you to disperse the nutrients and calories according to your needs. If you plan and balance your day, you will potentially reduce your chances of over eating at specific times, and you will feel energized and ready to tackle the challenges of your day. So, start setting your smart phones to remind you to refuel every 3 hours!
