Coach G’s Nutrition Corner: Organic! Not all created equal

Unless you have been living under a rock, you have most likely heard that organic foods are safer, healthier, tastier, you name it. Now this might be true for some products, all organic fruits and vegetables are not necessarily created equal. The organic debate crosses a broad spectrum and is riddled with various pro and con lists, so I am going to focus on just one area, contamination! I want to talk about what items should always be purchased organic, and what items can be purchased by conventional growing means. These lists have been dubbed “The Dirty Dozen” and “The Clean Fifteen”. Now what does this mean? The Dirty Dozen is a list of fruits and veggies that have been shown to contain the highest amount of synthetic chemicals (i.e. pesticides), while The Clean Fifteen is a list of the lowest contaminated food items. Keep in mind people, organic growing is a relatively new process and it is constantly evolving. These lists are updated quite regularly and new food items are often removed or added from both lists. Do your homework, stay educated, and keep making those small healthy changes.
